Were NASA's Astronauts Drunk in Space?

feelings 2007. 9. 19. 06:05
An internal investigation by NASA has found no evidence that astronauts consumed alcohol before space missions. The report released today refutes the findings of an independent panel, which cited at least two incidents when astronauts flew drunk. As ABC’s Mike Von Fremd reports now, today’s report may give a much needed boost to NASA’s image.

(Three, two, one and lift-off!) Today, the nation’s space agency tried hard to put an end to accusations that any of its astronauts flew drunk. An independent panel made the shocking claims that on at least two occasions, astronauts flew drunk. That prompted the space agency to look back through twenty years of records for any signs of misbehavior.

-- What I as an agency head can do is to investigate the stories and try to find any shred of truth. We’ve done that, we can’t find it.
There are ninety-three active astronauts, and many are furious their stellar reputations were being tarnished by a report commissioned by its own agency.
-- I never saw an inebriated astronaut show up for work, let alone show up for a flight.

NASA’s new internal investigation was launched after former astronaut Lisa Nowak’s bizarre cross-country journey from Houston to Orlando last February, where she allegedly assaulted a romantic rival, Captain Colleen Shipman.
-- The past six months have been very difficult for me.

Nowak plans to plead temporary insanity, putting the spotlight on NASA’s inability to recognize that one of its prized astronauts may have been mentally unstable. NASA today said it will change how it monitors astronauts, including mandatory psychological screening every year. Astronauts used to never undergo follow- up screening. And excess drinking will be banned for a year prior to flight.

The school of rocket scientists and elite aviators want everyone to know that they already hold themselves to a higher standard. Mike Von Fremd, ABC News, at the Johnson Space Center, Houston.
