The man who stood on the tank
and helped bring democracy to the former Soviet Union.

Well, the man at the center of perhaps the most dramatic political transformation in modern history
has died at the age of 76.
Former Russian President Boris Yeltsin came to power
as the Soviet Union was breathing its last breath.
He was Russia’s first freely elected President
and ruled during a time of dizzying and turbulent change.
ABC’s John Durban covered Yeltsin’s rise to power when he was our Moscow correspondent.
For about a 5-year period in the 1990s,
images of Boris Yeltsin never stopped coming,
but they seemed to tell two completely different stories.
When an army was sent to Moscow to turn back the clock on democracy to crush reform,
Yeltsin put his own body in the way of the guns.
Yeltsin got up on a tank.
It gave the crowd someone to follow.
It shamed the troops into switching sides.
It changed history. A pivot point in the collapse of the Soviet Empire.
It made Yeltsin, within months, the President of Russia
that at least for a while could be called democratic.
He was a guest at the western table.
A man Americans called an ally.
And his own people loved him.
So goes the first story.
And as the images from the 90s also told us,
he was frequently embarrassingly inappropriate
or just drunk, the insiders said, at home
and abroad, this was in Germany
and having launched the war against Chechnya that Russia could not win.
And a lot of group of corrupt cronies to steal the nation’s wealth
while millions fought poverty.
One whom his own people were happy to see he step down.
